For the #Whatdoyousee photo prompt challenge, Sadje offers us this (Unsplash) image by Polina Kuzovkova as the inspiration to compose poetry.

Inspired by this image, I wrote my poem, THE MAP. The Map reflects my hopeless navigational skills.

The Map

The Map: where am a I? | cartoon©️Lesley Scoble
THE MAP

Why am I reading a map of France?
I’m in Stockton-on-Tees
Not in le town of Lance,
Loir-et-Cher
I’m nowhere near there.

Why’ve I got a map of France?

I don’t know where I’m going,
I don’t know what to do
Which way do I go?
Do you know?
Do you know?
Do you?

Is that my train on the other side?
If it is, I’ve missed my ride.

Do I go north or south?
Back or forth?
East or west?
I turn the map up-side down
No matter how I fold it
and scold it
It’s still in France
Where’s Budapest?
Can it tell me?
Not a chance

I rummage in my pocket
I pull out string, and an old locket
Where’s my phone?

I search my handbag
I find make-up
and a fag,
(I don’t smoke)
what a joke,
but where’s my phone?

I’m here alone
in Stockton-on-Tees
with a map of France
I grumble in a grumpy tone
and hop about in a dance.
Where’s my phone!

YES!
Found it!
Oh, yes, yes, yes!
please
Switch on GPS

You’ll never GUESS
Where I Am

I’m not in Stockton-on-Tees, at all!

I fall on my knees

I’m in BIRMINGHAM

Lesley Scoble, July 2023

NOTES

In the poem, I mention a fag in the jumbled contents of my bag. The fag (slang for cigarette) and only in there because it rhymes with bag. Gag rhymes with fag too… and lag… and drag… and swag… and flag… and…

  1. I got lost in your words. Wonderful poem, Lesley. France, Birmingham, they’re all equally exotic places to me.

Paper map? Pff! That’s so last century. I’ve gotta say that the cigarette stub made me double take. Your note cleared that up.

    1. Thanks Tanmay!
Haha, methinks thou hast never been to Birmingham 😂
The fag line stumps me a bit (I believe that to Americans it has some other connotation?). I shall await the muse to alter it… 😁 It’s a bit of a fag!

      1. Do people still use that word for cigarettes there? It disappeared from our vocabulary around about 2006 or so. We started using ‘smoke’ instead.

You made me look up the etymology. It seems to have been in use as a pejorative since the sixteenth century.

      2. Yes, a fag is still used. “I’m going out for a fag” meaning cigarette. Have a drag of a fag 😁 Mention smoke and it means London to me. The Smoke=London

      5. There’s a lot worse than tobacco smoke there.

  2. It’s a fun poem Lesley but I can read the undertones of frustration too. I was the same when I went to live in Seattle with my daughter the first time. Thanks for joining in.

  6. As my dear George said, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.”
You are a delight, Lesley, and yes … we Americans who have been around for a while know a thing or two about fags. “And curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git!” I’m just full of quotes today! 😂
Love you and your fab ink! ❤︎ 😎

    1. 🙏💗 It takes a certain brain to be a good navigator. 🧠 If you see my brain’s missing part, please navigate it home. 😂
