I wrote my rhyme THE TWELVE ELVES OF CHORLEY WOOD in response to the Happy d’Verse Twelfth Anniversary, Quadrille Poetry Prompt. Hosted by MSDAJELI (btw, mine’s a pint!).

Msjadeli’s Prompt Guidelines
Pen us a poem of precisely 44 words (not counting the title), including some form of the word twelve.

THE TWELVE ELVES OF CHORLEY WOOD
(aka the dirty dozen)

There are twelve elves who live in Chorley Wood
They’re evil elves (except one, that is good)
They hangout in a gang in an elven den
beside poisoned toadstools close by the fen
Now Listen. Listen well.
Don’t go near their demon dell!
Understood?

  1. This makes me curious. How did the good one end up in this gang? I like your colorful image.

  4. Lesley, first off that is a beautiful and vivid image you’ve created! Your poem is enchanting. I remember reading The BFG by Roald Dahl to my kids when they were little. Likewise, The Big Friendly Giant was the only good one with a group of other giants who were all very bad. Thank you for writing such a fun poem and bringing The BFG back to me again. Wonderful use of the prompt word.

    1. Thank you Msjadeli, so much 💗
I never knew that about the BFG (never read it to my boys). Humph, Dahl stole my plot 😂

      1. Lesley it’s a magical story. I think Dahl grew up in an orphanage, so he has a keen empathy for small children in harsh circumstances. I loved your elves and picked the good one as the evil one! But as you say, you just never know with elves 😉

      2. 😁 I drew the pic so quickly—the characters need working on. I agree that the good elf should look more good 😇
Goodness I hope this doesn’t lead to me drawing more elves!

  9. This is certainly an unsavory lot, especially the one on the far right. I’ll not be turning my back on him. One looks happy – a simpleton, no doubt – and another quite confused, obviously looking for Robin Hood. The rest look like they’re up to no good and more than a bit constipated.

    1. 🤣😂🤣 haha you are so right! The one you picked as the worst of the lot—is the good one! 😂 I tried to make him look good but it didn’t work, did it? 😂

  12. Used to live near Chorley Wood, then in Ireland with even more faerie glens and now in West Yorkshire with a few giants around but haven’t found the faeries yet…
