Haibun Monday 8-28-23: Super Blue Moon
The d’Verse host, Frank J Tassone, invites us to write a haibun about the August Blue Moon. This full moon will be the third, and the largest, super moon of 2023. August claims two of them! Two super moons in one month is pretty rare. The last one was in 2018. The next time won’t be until 2037. This August 30th, the Blue Moon will be so bright it will outshine most stars.
An August moon, a campfire, and an owl

The fire crackled and spat little red stars. He pokes the coals with a fork. An owl hoots. There is a reply from the nearby wood. I watch him turn the sausages on the grill. The corn on the cob side-dish is charring to the singed colour that I love. The owl hoots again. Our tent is casting a long shadow across the field. I can’t recall a moon so bright as the one tonight. So bright that it could be daylight, but for one exception. It has an added ingredient. Mystery. He adds salt to our dinner which is sizzling. The aroma wafts upward and shrouds the moon. Rare blue moon shining brighter than any starlights An owl hoots alone Lesley Scoble, August 2023

The fire crackled … an owl hoots alone
