The Pantoum

The structure of a pantoum consists of a series of quatrains rhyming ABAB in which the 2nd and 4th lines of a quatrain recur as the 1st and 3rd lines in the succeeding quatrain; each quatrain introduces a new 2nd rhyme as BCBC, CDCD.

The first line of the series recurs as the last line of the closing quatrain, and third line of the poem recurs as the 2nd line of the closing quatrain, rhyming ZAZA.

Lines 2 and 4 become lines 1 and 3 in the succeeding stanzas. Until the last stanza.

The Last Stanza

Line one of the first stanza becomes the last line of the last stanza and the third line of the first stanza becomes the second line in the last stanza
