For Colleen Chesebro’s #TankaTuesday Weekly #Poetry Challenge No. 334, 8/22/23 I wrote a haiku. The Kigo words I chose for the haiku are cormorant and sea of clouds.

A little bit about the cormorant

Cormorants live in coastal and freshwater environments. I often watch them flying close to the surface of the Thames. I witnessed one swallowing an eel whole.

Cormorants are excellent divers and swimmers using their webbed feet to propel themselves underwater to catch fish.

Unlike most birds, their feathers are less waterproof to allow them to dive deeper and stay submerged for longer. They can dive 20 to 30 meters (65 to 100 feet). Some species even reaching 45 meters (148 feet).

They perch with their wings spread out to dry after swimming.

I sometimes think of the bird as a modern pterodactyl.

      1. Haiku has some rules. Most folks write micro-poetry and call it haiku. Once you learn to write haiku, they will pop into your head all the time. I’m constantly on the look out for kigo words now. LOL! I’m a haiku-geek. LOL! Wow, those are some amazing birds. They swallow eels whole… 😳
