I wrote my poem The Fox’s Mirth, inspired by the photo prompt for Melissa’s Flash Fiction Challenge #259.
The Fox’s Mirth
The fox laughed.
He’d heard it all before.
England banned the blood sport.
The fox was free to live a happy life,
No fear.
No strife,
No more redcoats a-hunting in bloody chase,
Across England’s green and pleasant lands.
No more trumpeting horns nor clap of hands,
Along country courses,
On their horses.
Never again the exhort of bloodhounds on his trail.
No more in chase of his orange russet rusty bounds glinting in the sun.
No more cutting off his tail,
Nor, smearing of the brush across their face, and bloodied, bloated brow.
Haha.
The fox laughed.
