Where’s Walter?

She walked down the aisle to the altar—
A hushed murmur arose from the back
(“Where’s Walter?”)
“He’s not here.”
“Alas and alack—he faltered!”
“Everything’s altered.”
“Because he is dead—or because he is queer?”
He’s not coming—can’t do it.”
“Oh dear”

I wrote my poem, ‘Where’s Walter,’ in response to Punam’s (Peansunplugged) challenge to write a 44-word quadrille poem including the word ‘alter’.
My thanks to d’Verse Poets, Quadrille #222: There’s no alternative.
Enormous thanks to our most gracious host, Punam, for her unalterable inspiration!
