I wrote my poem in response to #Tanka Tuesday Poetry Challenge No. 9. My heartfelt thanks go to this week’s host, Willow, for challenging us to compose an acrostic syllabic poem about ‘what is happening underground.’ Inspired by this fascinating prompt, I dug deep and crafted my haiku about the mining bee.

I’m always intrigued by the lives of small creatures, and last weekend, I captured on my iPhone a busy bumblebee digging.

  4. Loved your poem! And thanks for sharing your video. I haven’t seen any bees awaken here, yet, but the lady bugs are starting to dig themselves out from under the leaf matter.

  5. Beautifully done. I don’t think I have ever heard the term Mining Bee before- although I have come across burrowed bees.

  7. Your lyrics paint a poetic picture of the dormant and solitary life of the mining bees underground during the winter, full of hidden potential that will be released with the arrival of spring and its buzzing awakening. There is a beauty in this winter stillness, an anticipation of life to blossom and a connection to the natural and subway cycles of the world.

    Kind regards.

  9. When we lived in northern Florida several years ago, we had those burrowing bees. I’d never seen them before. Your poem captures those bees so well.
