  2. Lesley, I really enjoyed this!

The way your voice lands on “floor” and “flaw”—especially in your London accent—hits the pararhyme just right in a way my American tongue can’t quite mimic. Also, “The stag / is incomplete” stuck with me—it’s so visual and off-kilter!

  3. I hope you take this as a compliment because it is very much meant to be one- when I listened to your narration, I heard a young Margaret Rutherford. I love her so much, and hearing you read this was like hearing her again! Brilliant writing, you did an amazing job with this form, whether you knew what it was at the start or not.

    1. Haha! 😁 Violet, that’s what my mother always said! I thank you. I loved that actress. Thank you for listening 🙏 and thank you for the ‘young’ word. 🙃 I found it a tricky form and needed to read it out loud—so for fun, I recorded it. xx

  7. The written poem is strong – the pararhyme is deftly handled, subtle but structurally sound – but it was the reading that truly elevated it. I was immediately transported to a small, intimate theatre: Lesley alone on stage, seated at a table under a single spotlight, the rest in shadow. It felt like a monologue from a Beckett or Pinter play – searching, unresolved, and quietly devastating. A superb piece. Bravo! (That’s me standing and stomping the boards.)

  11. I loved listening to you reading the poem. It totally brings it to life! My favourite lines:

it left undone, without the antlers,
it would be… like an anthill, antless!

    and

A horse without its flowing mane?
    It’s like a beard without a man.

I can’t keep typing favourite lines, to heck with it the whole thing was fabulous!
