I wrote this poem for my friend, Christian Holder. We have been friends since our school days.

Christian’s talents were boundless—he was a dancer (one of the most iconic dancers of The Joffrey Ballet), singer, playwright, painter, and costume designer (he designed Tina Turner’s costumes from 1974-1984). Beyond his incredible artistic gifts, he was always charming and a true gentleman.

Christian’s oil paintings are sublime. Here is an image of the beautiful, three-foot-high painting he created of my sister.

W3 Poetry Prompt #162
I was already working on the elegy for Christian when I saw that this week’s W3 Poetry Prompt was on the theme of grief. With a few adjustments and inspiration from the prompt, I completed it.

My thanks to the Poet of the Week, Bob Lynn. I may not have completely fulfilled all the terms of his ‘grief’ prompt, but the inspiration helped guide me through a difficult poem.
As always, my gratitude goes to David Bogomolny, of The Skeptics Kaddish, for his motivation and encouragement. Follow the link below to learn more about the W3 poetry prompts.

  1. Lesley, your elegy for Christian is very moving to me, and you are in my thoughts. “The thunder claps. / ’Tis God’s applause” feels especially powerful—the image seems to echo with reverence and heartbreak all at once 💔

    Much love,
    David

  3. Lesley – this is a deeply moving tribute that beautifully captures the complex emotions of grief and lost friendship. Your use of ballet terminology creates stunning imagery that honours Christian’s artistry while weaving together past joy and present sorrow. The recurring refrain “I always thought I’d see you again” is haunting and powerful. Your metaphors of life as theatrical performance are particularly striking. This poem is a genuinely loving memorial that speaks to deeply universal human experiences.

  12. Oh Lesley! I read your poem with tears in my eyes, you truly captured the beautiful person that was Christian, such a gentle, funny and genuinely kind and dear friend. At school we would watch him dance, envious that he made it look so easy although we know he worked so hard. He was kind to everyone, even me who suffered lots of teasing because of my height. Meeting up with him again after all these years was a delight at one of the reunions. I also went to see him in one of his musical evenings where he made me feel so welcome. It is so sad to think he is gone. Your poem is beautiful like him.

      1. I’m afraid can’t make it as I have to pick Tyler (My foster child and gt.grandson) at 3:15 from school, If the funeral had been in the morning I would have come. I will watch the recording and will be with you all in spirit. Toni xxx
