I brewed my poem Teatime in response to this week’s W3 Poetry Prompt #184.
Marion Horton’s is the Poet of the Week, and she invites us to write up to 24 lines about food or drink that brings comfort. Well, that’s gotta be a cuppa tea—has it not‽
Teatime

The kettle whistles its high-pitched tune,
steam circles round the silver moon.
The teapot warms beside the fire—
I strum Brian Boru on my lyre.
The world slows down, the light turns gold—
it’s teatime, autumn days grow cold.
My boys come home in a blast of noise,
drop their schoolbooks, grab their toys.
Hands clasp round steaming mugs,
wrapping their drinks in warm bear hugs.
On a plate, crumpets, marmite, and jam,
malt loaf, piece of cake, a slice of ham.
I pour myself a cup of tea
and sink with comfort on my settee.

By the way, I do love applause—so I’ve brought out my clapometer again!

As the nights draw in and the chill settles around us, my thoughts turn to the simple warmth of food — food shared with family and friends around a kitchen table, or eaten from a tray beside the fire, curtains drawn against the dismal dark.
For this week’s prompt, let’s write about a food or drink that brings you comfort.
What gives you that touch of happiness when you think of it, smell it, or taste it? Does it recall a certain time, place, or person? Is it your “go-to” after a difficult day — or something that exists only in your imagination?
Include: The word “comfort”
Form: Any
Length: Up to 24 lines
THANK YOU
Thank you, Marion, for your delightful prompt.
