I wrote Rabbit Don’t Rhyme in response to this week’s W3 Poetry Prompt #187, where the poet‑of‑the‑week, Indira, invites us to write a poem on any subject—so long as it carries a comic touch without pathos. At first, I couldn’t think of a thing to write! So I turned myself into a rabbit with bad grammar (after all, it is incorrect to say “Rabbit don’t rhyme,” ain’t it?) who wanted to compose a funny verse but couldn’t decide which poetic form to use. I hope you find it at least slightly amusing.
Rabbit Don’t Rhyme
A hare-brained attempt at rhyme

I want to write a rhyme that’s funny.
But, what to write‽
I haven’t a clue
Shall I write something punny—
or a clerihew?
I could write something quick
like a joke
or a limerick?
Oh, what shall I write‽
I haven’t a clue,
I don’t know,
do you?
I could write some satire,
or something witty.
A nonsense rhyme
or some ditty.
Oh, what shall I write‽
I could try a doggerel.
“What’s that?
Never heard of it…
isn’t it a bank?”
“No, Roger,
Let’s be frank.
There’s a Dogger Bank
off the east coast of England.
And,
anyway.
You can’t write anything funny
You’re only a rabbit
that eats lettuce, honey, and thyme”
“Shouldn’t you say, bunny?
Rabbit don’t rhyme…
with funny.”
