Who I Once Was
Playing in the yard,
(but learning maths
was hard)
dirty knees,
kicking a ball,
climbing trees —
swinging a swing
doing my own thing
that’s all
I wanted
to do.
When was the last time
I played,
or stayed
over with a mate.
I’m getting older,
time is getting late —
no time for tea and jam,
got to put money in the till.
Still,
I like who I am,
but
I miss
who I once was
because…
I liked being a child —
it was wild

I couldn’t decide which song interpretation — Rap or Folk — suited the poem best, so I’ve published both renditions. I’d love to know your preference, so I’ve placed a little clap‑o‑meter beneath each.
Rap — Who I Once Was
Folk — Who I Once Was
Who I Once Was was written in response to Sadje’s #Whatdoyousee #343 prompt and inspired by Tanya Barrow’s image below.
