A mockโ€‘operatic pantoum in which a couple argue with great seriousness while ignoring the obvious.

I wrote Elephant in the Room in response to Poet-of-the-Week Reena Saxenaโ€™s excellent prompt for the W3 Poetry Prompt #228. You can read her full pantoum guidelines below.

Reenaโ€™s Prompt: Pantoum

This week, I invite you to explore the music of repetition by writing a pantoum on any theme or subject.

A pantoum unfolds in four-line stanzas, with each stanza carrying two lines into the next:

  • The second line becomes the first line of the next stanza.
  • The fourth line becomes the third line of the next stanza.
  • Add new lines in the second and fourth positions, letting the repeated lines gather fresh meaning in their new surroundings.

Continue for as many stanzas as you like. To bring the poem full circle, the final stanza traditionally uses the opening stanzaโ€™s third line as its second line, and the poemโ€™s opening line as its closing line.

For inspiration, read my pantoum, โ€œPockets of Happinessโ€. Explore this guide to writing a pantoum, and try this handy pantoum-writing tool to keep your repeating lines in place.

Let your lines returnโ€”and see what new meanings they gather along the way!

Thank you, Reena, for your inspiration.
Thank you, David, for your encouragement and support.
And thank you, the reader, for stopping by.

I wish to express my sympathy in memory of all who suffered in the 9/11 Twin Towers attack.

  1. Entertaining, yet close to truth. The elephant in the room is never mentioned, while other allegations keep flying around.

  4. Lovely poem, Lesley. I didnโ€™t like mine – itโ€™s workmanlike – but having read yours I realised what I needed to do. Mine needs a jauntier rhythm so Iโ€™m off to re-write it in tetrameter. Many thanks.

    1. Thank you, Dennis. Thatโ€™s really kind of you โ€” Iโ€™m genuinely flattered. Iโ€™m glad mine helped you see the rhythm you wanted. Tetrameter sounds very posh. Canโ€™t wait to read yours. ๐Ÿ’•

      1. Not posh. Itโ€™s the rhythm of many nursery rhymes and a certain witchesโ€™ chantโ€””Double, double toil and trouble, fire burn and caldron bubbleโ€. ๐Ÿ˜

  7. I love your poem. The title is so fitting for the poem you wrote. The part about -not listening to a word I say- is classic.

  9. Lesley, Iโ€™m beginning to suspect the elephantโ€™s enormous ears are wasted on the only member of this household who actually listens :-D

  10. A very original and quite humorous poem. I liked how it repeats phrases and links them together to create an almost absurd, yet very relatable, conversation. The “pink elephant in the room” adds that funny touch that makes you think about what everyone sees, but no one wants to acknowledge.
