I wrote two endings to this poem and couldn’t decide which version to publish, so I’ve shared both.

Fantasy version

Pen-and-ink woodland illustration showing a young figure startled by a whirlwind of autumn leaves and an unseen force. Sweeping lines trace the force's path through trees and undergrowth, while a staff or spear stands beside the figure amid ferns, mushrooms and fallen leaves.

Fairy tale pantomime version

The words are the same as the fantasy version except for the last line — which changes everything.

Watercolour illustration of a boy in the woods startled by the effects of an unknown force erupting from the forest floor. A squirrel and robin observe from nearby trees.

A pantomime song

It also sparked the beginnings of an idea for a panto script.
