The Market Trader and his Bag

#WDYS #202, 4th September 2023
I wrote my poem THE MARKET TRADER AND HIS BAG in response to Sadje’s What do you see photo prompt.
The Market Trader and his Bag Every day I walk this way with a heavy bag on my shoulder. (I wonder whatever shall I do whenever I get older?) I carry goods to market, to barter, trade and wrangle, My neck aches because it rakes at a forty-degree angle, Ten numbed fingers are feeling dead, The bag pressed flat against my head, My expression glum From whence did I come? My poor back hurts and my burdened arms are sore. What happens when I can’t lug it anymore? I shift my bag and hold it high, With nothing left to sell or buy I’ll do what old men do, And shut up shop and die. Ah, but by then I shall be rich and have a car to put it in! I shall drive to the marketplace in a Ford or red McLaren, I’ll work with style and grace, a smile upon my face and sell my wares. What’s inside my bag? Who cares. Lesley Scoble, September 2023
