Michele Navajas is the Poet of the Week for the W3 We’ave Weekly Poetry Prompt. She asks us to write a poem on the theme of love lost and found. Please see her guidelines below where she gives details of the Hay(na)ku poetry form.
Mich’s prompt guidelines Write a multiple/chained hay(na)ku on the theme of “love lost and found”. Hay(na)ku? Hay(na)ku is a very simple poetic form and one of the newest. It was inaugurated on the Web on June 12th, 2003 (Philippines Independence Day) by Filipino poet Eileen Tabios (b. 1960). Three lines; L1: one word; L2: two words; L3: three words; There are some variations of this new poetic form. For instance, a reverse hay(na)ku has lines of three, two, and one words for L1, L2, and L3 respectively. Also, multiple hay(na)ku can be chained together to form longer poems.

NOTES How to pronounce Hay(na)ku If you are a good old London Cockney, you have a head start in pronouncing Hay(na)ku correctly. Drop the aitch and say ‘ay. Eileen Tabios The Hay (na) ku is the invention of poet and publisher Eileen Tabios. The worldwide web spread the word and its official inauguration was in 2003. On the same day as the Philippine Independence Day, June the 12th. Eileen Tabios at first called the form Pinoy Haiku. A chap called Vince Gotera suggested she change it to Hay(na)ku, and it stuck. It corresponds to a Tagalog word phrase meaning ‘Oh!’ or the Spanish exclamation ‘Madre Mia!’. In which case, it might be valid to place an exclamation mark at the end of Hay(na)ku! Tagalog? Tagalogs are a collection of phrases in Tagalog, an Austronesian language spoken mainly in the Philippines. For a list of Tagalog phrases visit here.
