I walked past St Mary-Le-Bow the other day and the bells were ringing. I recorded them on my iPhone.

I thought it might be fun to narrate my poem. Here is the recording. Enjoy!

The traditional folk song and nursery rhyme Oranges and Lemons mention the “great bell at Bow”. This is an old children’s street song I remember playing in my childhood. The rhyme mentions only one great bell. There are, in fact, twelve bells of Bow. They cast them at the famous Whitechapel foundry founded in 1570.

This historic foundry closed in 2017 after almost 450 years of casting church bells.

Today (the 5th of January) it is my birthday. I should like to thank you all in advance for any birthday greeting, commiseration, face lifts and large bottles of champagne. 😁 Cheers! 🍾 (or in the words of Robbie Burns Hoots mon the noo!
I’ll leave you with my birthday self portrait titled it’s weird being the same age as old people!

  1. You had me laughing before I got to your poem with “I’d tell you the name of the pub—but it gets crowded enough as it is.”

As usual, an excellent post in its entirety. Your reading was the cherry on top for sure. (You know, you could always turn your camera off on Open Link Night so no one can see you.😅 Just mentioning it. No pressure. Your reading was stunning.)

    1. Oh, thank you, Suzanne, 🙏
We live in the City and my sons were born within the sound of the Bow bells. I was not. I was born in Hammersmith.
When we meet up we should take a walk down Cheapside. 😁
I look forward to your poem very much, 🌹

  3. Happy Birthday!! What a great write. I could get a real sense of this Commoner on her way down Cheapside. I’m so glad you read it, I didn’t do justice to the accent. Those bells are magnificent, we don’t hear church bells like that in small town Canada.

    1. Thank you so much, Heather.
There are so many bells around here! 😂 Sometimes they all ring at the same time. There are the bells of St Paul’s… and the Charterhouse bells which are my favourite—they have a mysterious mellow ancient tone.
I’m drinking Champagne and toast your comment. Cheers! 🍾🥂

  11. Lesley,

Congratulations on being recognized as the PoW for W3! Your poem, “Them Great Bells of Bow,” in Cockney dialect, beautifully intertwines the themes of love, nature, and the human condition, paying homage to Robbie Burns. The vivid imagery and your masterful use of language make this delightful and memorable… Keep weaving the magic of words!

  12. Belated happy birthday, Lesley 😊🥳 I enjoyed reading your poem. It came after listening to a recitation of that 16th century poem ‘Tom O’ Bedlam’, which is filled with slang and old colloquialisms. This made me doubly enjoy this element which you wove into your poem so skillfully.

I’ve just looked Tom O’Bedlam up. It’s great! Thanks for introducing me to it. 🙏

  14. Lesley this was a very fun read and then to hear you read it added another layer of delight! I used to have a microphone in my laptop but too many zoom meetings during COVID killed it and now I can’t record anything luckily my speakers still work!! Bravo! And a belated Happy Birthday!
p.s. thanks for a challenging and enjoyable prompt!!

    1. Thank you, Muri,
I borrowed a mic from my son who’s a YouTuber 😁 It is a Rôde mic with a lead that goes straight into the iPad. I had great fun with it. I think I’ll have to get one! Maybe there is an external mic that can suit you, too? External mics are best, methinks.
I’m glad you enjoyed the prompt (I found it difficult 😂). Thanks for the birthday greetings. I always need cheering up at birthday time 😁🥳 xx
