I wrote my poem, They Never Knew, in response to Sadje’s Whatdoyousee #262 Photo prompt challenge.
For the visually challenged reader, this image shows a field of red poppies, in the middle of which two trees are growing. In the back, the sun is rising in a sky where a few scattered clouds are floating! 11-11 is celebrated as Armistice day/ Remembrance Day to celebrate the end of WW II. And red poppies are symbolic of this day.
They Never Knew

young men lie
where poppies grew;
they never knew
they would die that day,
in blood-stained mud
and where they lay
another dawn will rise;
and on this land
of final cries,
a new field of poppies,
red,
will grow
they did not know
that on some future day
strong trees will stand
where splintered woods decay
in shell-blasted fields of requiem,
where lay the dead,
poppies, still with stains of blood,
will grow,
and we will remember them
