Prompt Guidelines
Inspired by the image of a field of sunflowers in the poem Fields Will Nod, we turn our gaze outward—to scapes. Your scape might be a landscape, seascape, cityscape, dreamscape—any view that stirs something in you.
It could be drawn from memory or daily life, from a photograph or a painting, from what still stands or what’s long gone.
Write in any form that helps you say what you need to say. Just be sure to include the word scape somewhere in your piece.
I wrote a poem about a soundscape—and turned it into a song! (audio at the foot of the poem). I hope you enjoy it!
Soundscape Serenade

I live in a soundscape—
listening to my EarPods.
I’m in a musical world,
in the lap of the gods.
I’m rocking with a bop
and an allegro beat;
I’m dancing at a bash—
and moving my feet.
Sound waves crash
against my ears;
I’m raving to a song
from Tears for Fears.
I’d love to sing along—
but I sound
like a strangled cat,
and my voice is flat.
Don’t get me wrong—
I can’t sing a sharp either;
I can’t hit the right key
in C, B, or G.
People all say:
“What the—?”
I can’t sing for toffee;
my voice can clear a room
faster than a sweep
from a witch’s broom.
I live in a soundscape—
listening to my EarPods.
I’m in a musical world,
in the lap of the gods.
