This week’s challenge from W3 Poetry Prompt #182 invites you to write a Triolet — a short, musical poem that loops back on itself through repetition and rhyme — celebrating the ordinary. To read the full prompt and poetry form guidelines from Poet of the Week, Sarah Whiley, please click below.

  1. For some reason this made me think immediately of “A Most Peculiar Man” by Simon and Garfunkel. To be familiar and natural is actually a gift, and not ordinary at all. (K)

    1. I agree, Kerfe. I hope these little poems help celebrate that fact.
Btw, thank you for your Bop prompt last week—it inspired me to write a poem, but I didn’t have time to finish it. 🙏

      1. I often don’t have time or inspiration for prompts so no problem. It’s a good form though, and perhaps it will work for something else down the road.

  2. Great idea Lesley. 👏

It stood out to me, the use of ‘me wife’ in the first poem. This reminds me of both the UK and Australia, where this use seems to indicate a working class background, or, perhaps, just people more ordinary. I kinda like to hear it used but it’s hard not to instantly judge someone from its use.

    1. Thank you, Shaun. I hope my poems don’t appear as judgemental but more as an acknowledgement. 🙏 Ordinary people are the “salt of the earth”.

      1. Not at all (re: judgemental) – it was more an observation about myself. I think some ordinary people are the salt of the earth… 😉

  9. As your triolets show, nothing wrong with ordinary. I wish more were straightforward with “no airs or graces”. Your artwork, as always, is super.
