I wrote Under the Mulberry Tree in response to the W3 Poetry Prompt #185, where the Poet of the Week, Shaun Tenzenmen, invites us “to create a poem that utilises internal rhyme where possible and keep the length between 8 and 16 lines.”
I seem to still be lingering in last week’s mode of writing about food and drink! I hope you enjoy it—and perhaps even dance along to the song. 🎶
Under the Mulberry Tree
from Noon to Moon
In the month of June at the height of noon
laid ‘neath the shade, of the mulberry tree
I sip rose-hip juice, an’ homemade lemonade.
At half past three I’ll brew some tea
Eat cake… and a Cadbury’s Flake…
Eat cream scones… dream of unicorns…
and sleep deep ‘neath the mulberry tree.
At five to nine when I sit down to dine,
I drink fine white wine instead of red
(I don’t like red—I call it puce).
Later on, when the sun has gone,
when the moon is full—an’ I’ve had a skinful—
I’ll drink another glass of white (think I already said, I don’t like red)
Then I bid you goodnight—turn out the light—I’m off to bed.
