I wrote this nonet poem in response to the W3 Poetry Prompt #193, where the poet-of-the-week, Carol Anne, invites us to write a nonet that captures the thoughts, expectations, and emotions of stepping into a new year.

I didn’t write about goals, intentions, or resolutions, but instead tried to express how I feel about the worldwide, costly explosions of fireworks. My heart always sighs when the fireworks begin and I witness scared birds taking flight, disturbed from their nighttime roosts.

THANK YOU
Thank you, Carol Anne, for your inspiring nonet prompt.

  3. A great poem, Lesley. I despise fireworks which are a totally selfish and unnecessary human interference with the environment.

  4. I so agree Lesley – animals are petrified while humans just gawp and go ‘AH’

  5. I’m thankful that fireworks aren’t the norm here. Instead we have a president who is blowing up our democracy, invading foreign sovereign countries, talking about annexing parts of other countries – in general being an idiot and attempting to drag the US into wars so that he can become the ruler for life! I’d trade these fireworks for the pretty ones in a heart beat!
