I wrote this nonet poem in response to the W3 Poetry Prompt #193, where the poet-of-the-week, Carol Anne, invites us to write a nonet that captures the thoughts, expectations, and emotions of stepping into a new year.
I didn’t write about goals, intentions, or resolutions, but instead tried to express how I feel about the worldwide, costly explosions of fireworks. My heart always sighs when the fireworks begin and I witness scared birds taking flight, disturbed from their nighttime roosts.
Midnight
explosions, gunpowder blasting—
bangs, rockets firing sparkling stars
crowds aghast gasp—oohs and ahhs
scared birds flap up in flocks
from soft nestling roosts
in flight of fear
of new year
fireworks
