The Quiet Wood
Haibun
Listen.
I couldn’t hear the birds. None sang. Ancient trees stand aloof, like sentinels in a breathless wood.
No leaves stir.
gentle lapping stream
slipping through quiet shadows
wandering at will
I sigh and turn away.
A twig cracks like a gunshot under my feet.
