A minimalist devotional poem and hymn

House of God
has many pews
one after the other 
in polished rows

humbled beneath
their exalted height,
celestial arches
leading through

God’s hall,
built tall
to humble all.

NOTES
Listening to my poem interpreted as a hymn brought back memories of a visit to the John Wesley Chapel in London. While looking at the organ, I fell into conversation with a cleric, who explained that it had belonged to Charles Wesley. Charles, the younger brother of John Wesley, was one of the great hymn writers of the eighteenth century and is credited with thousands of hymns, including Hark! The Herald Angels Sing. To my delight, the cleric then invited me to play the organ. It’s not every day one gets the chance to play Charles Wesley’s organ, is it‽
