In the Wings
I breathe in
and slowly out
I wait
with baited bate of breath
my cue is near
I wait
in the dark
in fear
I might
forget my lines
time to
flee or fight
I wait
behind the flap
my cue is nigh
I enter stage right
the audience clap
I’m on a high

d’Verse Poets
I wrote my poem In the Wings for the d’Verse Poets’ Revisiting O’Keefe prompt hosted by Melissa Lemay.
Acknowledgements
My special thanks to Melissa for her ekphrastic prompt, which invited participants to write a piece inspired by a selection of paintings by the brilliant artist Georgia O’keeffe. To me, Abstraction Red and Black, Night (1929) evoked the tension of waiting backstage before going on stage.
And my thanks to you, the reader, for stopping by.
