The POW (poet of the week) for the W3 We’ave Weekly Poetry Prompt this week is Melissa Lemay.
Melissa’s Prompt Guidelines •Choose one of the two paintings below and construct a poem of any form, using the artwork as inspiration and incorporating the colours shown.

I love paintings by Marc Chagall. He is a painter of dreams. My choice of painting for the inspiration for my poem, HIGH AS A KITE, is Chagall’s painting, Over the Town.

High as a Kite
I’m flying high as a kite Right up high in the sky so far up I’m out of sight I’ve never been at this altitude before I’m only 5 foot in height and like being close to the floor Am I in a dream? Have I been taken? Should I scream? Am I mistaken? Why am I here? What am I doing? I’ve got vertigo and fear I shall fall It’s a hell of a drop I’m in a bit of a strop And perplexed by it all. Is that russet Dorset, or a town in Devon we’re flying over? or is it Dover? Kevin, go any higher, mate and you and I might end up in blue Heaven Why are we flying? I wish we’d driven (not keen on dying) Instead of this floating I’d rather go boating It’s all very well WAFT-ING with the clouds In a colourful dream of red and blue and green and cream But, I prefer feet on the ground Safe and sound On solid brown Earth Take me back Quick! I feel rather sick I’m turning green Come back tomorrow have a rest in between take me home there’s a good fellow my house is down there the one where the shutters are yellow. Kevin mutters, okay we’ve wafted enough for today. Lesley Scoble, May 2023
My thanks to David, W3 Weekly Poetry Prompt, as always for his encouragement and inspiration.
