A soft pencil and watercolour sketch of a young girl’s legs and small feet standing in a pair of grown‑up high‑heeled shoes that are too big for her.

—Lesley Scoble, September 2026

I wrote my micro poem inspired by the W3 Poetry Prompt #227, where the magnificent writer and poet Nigel Byng challenges us to show a little discipline and write in a tight form. To read his full guidelines, click below.

Nigel’s prompt: Leaving childhood behind

Let’s work with tighter forms this week and see what a little discipline can reveal.

Choose one specific object or place from your childhood—a bedroom doorway, a schoolyard swing, a favorite toy, a familiar street—and write about the moment when it began to feel different: when you sensed that childhood was receding and something else had begun.

You may write a micro free-verse poem, a senryū, or a haiku.

CREDITS
My thanks to Nigel for his inspiration.
My thanks to David of The Skeptics Kaddish for his steady encouragement.
My gratitude to both is deep.

    1. I was about four when I first dressed up in my mother’s high heels — and draped myself in her beaded jewellery. There’s an old black‑and‑white photo somewhere to prove it. 😂

Do you have any photos of your kids in your shoes? I’d so love to see them.

      Much love, L xxx

Not for actors and poets. I’m always slapping about in other people’s shoes.

    Excellent poem as always.

  4. Great take Lesley. I ruined a few pairs of my mums in my dress up years…. I remember my first pair of heels, that I was allowed to wear to a wedding. I was finally in an adult size 3 and had white wedge heel Sandals – I remember them so well!! 💞

    1. Thank you, kind friend. I do wonder why we’re all drawn to high heels 🤭 I’m so glad my few words stirred a happy memory for you, Suzanne. 👠

  5. How well I remember trying to wear my mom’s heels! She finally had enough and bought me a pair of play heels, glittery plastic with elastic straps to keep them securely on. That was it for me! I’d made the big time with my very own pair of heels and I never looked back! Such a wonderful poem that truly resonates with me. Nicely done, Lesley! 👠

    1. Thank you so much, Nancy 🤗 My mother always said heels were bad for my soft, growing bones 🤭 but I still played grown‑up in them countless times. I’m so happy the poem resonated with you. And viva the high heels. 👠

  11. When the high heels fit / that was it / childhood pretend / was done.” Lesley, that’s the exact moment, isn’t it? Not a decision. Just a moment when the shoes fit and you realized you weren’t playing anymore. You were becoming. The high heels didn’t make you grown up they just made it real. Beautiful and brief. 💙 / Love & Hugs / Khadija 💕🤗
