The Walking Frame

micro poem

Pencil drawing by Lesley Scoble of a walking frame.

The walking frame
in the room
looked through me

aluminium
mute
cold

Iโ€™d never felt this old

โ€”Lesley Scoble, September 2026

My mother saidโ€ฆ

When I was younger, happily lolling about on the sofa, my mother would say, โ€˜Itโ€™s better to wear out than rust out.โ€™

Well, Ma โ€” I wore out.
All my years dancing on stage and television (and anywhere else after a couple of beers) have taken their toll on my joints. The wild grand jetรฉs along tabletops and bar counters have finally done for me.

On 19 August I had a major bilateral hip operation. Like an old jalopy, I went into hospital for spare parts.

Iโ€™m at home recuperating now, and this is where my microโ€‘poem comes in. The walkingโ€‘frame โ€˜thingโ€™ seems to be looking at me all the time. I assure you it wonโ€™t be long before itโ€™s standing beside the bins, where it may stare coldly at whoever it likes โ€” as long as itโ€™s not at me.

Great news. I no longer need the walking frame. It has been chucked out and left by the recycling bins ready for disposal.

  2. Ouch, I know the feeling, but the frame is there to help …. I have arthritis in both hips and my spine, I really do feel your pain… take care, and wishing you a smooth recovery.. ๐Ÿ’ž

    1. Thank you, sweet Suzanne. Iโ€™m very sorry to hear that you suffer from it. โ˜น๏ธ I didnโ€™t know I had it until the pain became unbearable and made walking very difficult. The surgeon said another year and it would have been irreparable. Iโ€™m improving daily and canโ€™t wait to skip up a mountain again. ๐Ÿ”๏ธ Much love to you. ๐Ÿ’•

      1. I must admit I didnโ€™t know either, thought it was my fibromyalgiaโ€ฆ but afraid notโ€ฆ oooh I didnโ€™t know it could become irreparable maybe in need to discuss this furtherโ€ฆ. I canโ€™t even walk my dog anymore ๐Ÿ˜ข. I am so glad to hear you are improving dailyโ€ฆ yes you must skip along those mountain pathsโ€ฆ. Much love and keep healing ๐Ÿ’ž

      2. Please get yourself sorted โ€” itโ€™s far too miserable not being able to walk your dog. The operation is genuinely lifeโ€‘saving, and when hips deteriorate they can affect the back, sometimes leaving it bent.
Hugs and love back to you ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿ’–

  4. Oh dear! No one wants that! I can and do empathize with you, my friend. It’s a day-to-day recuperation; take it slow and let your body tell you what it needs. You’ll get there and having such an active past will help with your recovery. โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน

Love your very relatable micro! ๐Ÿฅฐ

  5. Wow Lesley thatโ€™s awful but good to hear youโ€™re at home recuperating. Your youthful escapades will stand you in good stead Iโ€™m sure. With such a positive attitude the walking frame will soon be kicked out to glare at all the passersby. Looking forward to your poem about that.

    Best wishes

    1. Yes, thank goodness โ€” or Iโ€™d be on the scrap heap. And wow, your mum is 88 and your aunt is 92; thereโ€™s hope for me yet. Iโ€™m a mere baby. Thank you so much, Robbie. ๐Ÿ™โค๏ธ
